What to Expect When You Schedule a Dentist Appointment

Jun 15, 2023

Most people get anxious when it comes to booking a dentist appointment. However, biannual visits are imperative to improve your oral health and hygiene. When you know what to expect, you'll feel more at ease with each subsequent visit. Dentists are mindful of their patients' fears and are well-trained to make them feel at home.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in May 2020, the median annual income for dentists was $164,010. They've worked hard to gain the skills to treat patients and understand that being dependable and competent is critical to maintaining a good reputation. Let's explore what you can expect during your visit.

Booking

When you call the clinic, you'll be asked for a time and date that you prefer. If they're busy in that slot, you'll be presented with an alternative. Your personal information will be taken down along with whether you have any insurance.

Arrival

When you arrive for your appointment, you'll be given forms to fill out regarding your dental and medical history. You'll also be asked for the specifics of your insurance. Your date of birth and emergency contact details are also two examples of the personal information required.

Waiting Area

Upon completion of the paperwork, you'll be directed to the waiting area. This may have magazines, a TV, or even some soft background music. Some clinics may have a self-service coffee vending machine.

Examination

You'll soon be taken in for a dental examination. The assistant or hygienist will give you eyewear to put on for protection. They'll then inspect your teeth, gums, tongue, and the rest of your mouth. They will clean your teeth and may polish them if necessary. If they notice a lot of plaque and tartar, you may be advised on how to brush and floss properly. You may also be taken for X-rays to examine for cavities.

Treatment

The dentist will come to do a thorough inspection and may use different tools. Any necessary treatment will be based on the findings the hygienists and X-rays come across. They'll explain why you may need treatment, its benefits, the details of the procedure, and the costs involved. They'll also address any queries or concerns you have.

Follow-Up

If you need any further treatment, you'll be told when to schedule your next appointment and what to do in the meantime. If there's no need for further treatment, you'll be asked to return every six months for a routine check-up.
